Nineties Breakup
It is the nineties
How technologically great
There are so many ways to
Remember you are gone
I ritually check:
The mailbox
The phone to hear if it’s beeping
My email...
I dial 69 (how appropriate) to see if you’ve called
And hung up
Finally-
You leave a message while I’m at the grocery store
There is an irony to your calling
While I’m out
There is an irony to buying food
When I am starving
For contact -
Which no amount of food can fill
Your message sounds breathless and far away
You say you’re in a phone booth
In downtown Toronto
You are going to see a play and blah blah blah
You sound happy which stabs like daggers
You tell me you miss me which soothes like silk
I push 1-1
And listen to you 4 times
I want not to care
I tell myself
To press delete
But instead
I push 9 to save you
For when I need
A 911 emergency injection
A fix
Of sugar water
To ease my craving for
Honey
Red golden and slow
