On Fortune Tellers
If you go to a Psychic, how do you know if she’s for real?
It seems like you just have to take her word for it.
She lights some special candles, puts on some mood music
She turns on one of those little personal water fountains.
She has a deck of Tarot cards and special stones for you to hold.
Yup. She has all the right paraphernalia...
Which is comforting... but also vaguely suspicious
I mean, is all that stuff just dressing up a big steaming bowl of BS?
How can you tell?
It’s not like she has a diploma on her wall from Psychic University.
It’s not like she has had to pass a series of tests, like spoon or fork bending,
She doesn't have a Diploma of Past Lives, does she?
Or a Certificate for Driving a Car Blindfolded to the Hospital with a
Lady About to Give Birth in the Back Seat.... that kind of thing
So, how do you know?
Where's the proof?
It seems like the way you know a Psychic is real is
She can tell you something about yourself that is true.
A Psychic tells you that you have two brothers and a sister
And you do!
She tells you your mother has passed away.
And she has!
She tells you your father has a bad heart.
And he does!
Wow! You think.... She’s amazing!
How could she possibly know these things?
She must be for real!
But the question is
Why do we need to go to a Psychic to find out what we already know?
Why pay fifty bucks to hear your mother is dead?
Weren’t you at the funeral?
Wasn’t it pretty much confirmed at that point?
When a Psychic is wrong about what happens in the future,
We say to ourselves,
Yeah, but she knew all about the family.
