How Ending a Relationship is like Gum on Shoes

Ending a relationship is like dealing with
A huge wad of soft bubble gum
on the sole of your shoe
No matter how many steps you take forward
You still have strings attached to where you've been
You have used everything you can think of to get the gum off
Like cleaning solvent
And scraping at the gum with popsicle sticks but to no avail
You tell yourself you could not have tried harder to save these shoes
But, pieces of gum are still stuck deep down between the treads.
It’s a losing battle!
You chide yourself for stepping in the gum in the first place
Why weren't you watching where you were going?
You might have known this would happen!
Well, hindsight is a wonderful thing...but totally not helpful now.
Inside, you know there is only one thing to do:
As much as it hurts, you have to get rid of the shoes!
Be done with it!
Start fresh! You’re due for a new pair anyway!
But you secretly still really like the old ones!
They're all scuffed up and are a pain in the ass to lace up
but they're comfortable!
Your friends tell you
"Never mind, they never really suited you"
"They weren't your style"
"They hardly went with anything"
Which you realize is basically true
So. It's time to take a deep breath and put them in recycling
Let someone else deal with them!
Subconsciously you will probably be attracted
To new shoes that look the same as the old ones
Your friends will bug you about this
“Try something new…” they coax, “Don’t go for the same old thing!
Get new ones with smoother treads…be adventurous”
One piece of advice.....
Be careful picking up recently discarded second hand shoes
They might still have their own gum stuck to the bottom
And attachments you may not want to have to deal with.
