Seven Deadly Sins
The parts in italics are meant to be sung
There are seven deadly sins, wrote Dante,
Seven deadly ways to fall by the wayside
Upside down.
The devil's in the details,
The devil’s got dibs on our keeping our sins
Lovingly cherished by the owner
One evening Satan came to Jesus on the mountaintop
Offered him the World
As if it were his to give
But Jesus was bound for Heaven anyway
And said no thank you
No pride of property there
So back to the inferno went Lucifer
Vowing vengeance on the mortals
They are not as much fun but infinitely more corruptible
There are seven Deadly Sins, wrote Dante
Seven deadly ways to fall by the wayside upside down
One morning you came to my fortress
Patched jeans and daisied hair
Like an angel you coaxed me
And I, instantly Slothful to details,
(the devil’s in the details….)
Forewent the safety of the drawbridge
Using Pride as my mirror, I embodied Lust
Craving the pleasures of your body
Like Tantalus I tried to drink you in
But in the end I was unquenchable; a Glutton
Wanting more than you were made for and
I fell by the wayside upside down
In desperation I offered you the world
As if it were mine to give
But you were bound for other worlds anyway
And said no thank you
No pride of property there
And you locked me in Hell
With your Key Of The Righteous
In a Fury you confessed my sins
As if they were your own
Still Greedy you confessed your sins
As if they were my own --
But always, just beneath the surface
The addiction; a contradiction
(How can you deny it – it is there still)
There is a consuming Envy
For a love that so eats away the heart
I heard later your friends wept over it
A fault, they maintained, not a virtue
But Dante knows they will be
The farthest from Paradise
With their eyes sewn shut
A small consolation
Heaven sent
